PRO LOCO NETTUNO

MEDIEVAL
QUARTER

MEDIEVAL QUARTER (BORGO MEDIEVALE) This is definitely the most suggestive part of the city. It is completely enclosed by massive walls, its dark narrow streets suddenly widening to be lined by austere palace of the powerful families that once ruled Nettuno. Outside the gate before entering the "borgo" there is the Fountain of Neptune (Fontana di Nettuno), a symbol of the city, executed in 1882 in travertine by Ottavio De Angelis. Within the borgo the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj comes into view which today houses a scholastic institute and where valuable frescoes by Pier Francesco Mola (1612-1666) are still preserved. The painter Mola, sensitive to the style of Pietro da Cortona and Guercino, expressed this artistic vein most originally in his painting of landscapes. Also of note are both the massive Baronial Palace (Palazzo Baronale) and the collegiate church of Santi Giovanni Battista ed Evangelista, which it is said was originally an ancient terapie to Neptune, completely rebuilt according to a plan by Carlo Marchionni (1702-1786) between 1736 and 1749. The walk around the outside of the walls is particularly breathtaking, with its splendid view of the Tyrrhenian coast and the Sangallo Fortress.
